PNG, Portable Network Graphics, raster graphics file format was created as the free, open-source successor to GIF. .png file format supports 8 bit paletted images and  24 bit truecolor or 48 bit truecolor with and without alpha channel. The lossless PNG format is best suited for pictures still under edition - and the lossy formats. PNG provides a patent-free replacement for GIF.
