MTS (High-definition MPEG Transport Stream) file format is a container format for multiplexing audio, video and other streams. The MTS video format was developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic for their users. Now supported by high definition (HD) camcorders like Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Canon, Sanyo etc.

.MTS file extension, commonly called "AVCHD", is based on the popular MPEG4 video codec. Using MTS file format, you can record HD video files up to 1080i and 720p. You can play MTS files on Windows Mac and Linux platform with VLC Media player, Windows Media Player. Some editing software also support AVCHD MTS files like Apple Final Cut Pro X on Mac OS, and Sony Vegas Pro 11, Windows Movie Maker on Windows.
