MP4 vs 3GP

MP4 is a part of MPEG-4, is standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). As a container format, MPEG-4 files uses separate compression for audio and video tracks. And .mp4 files are often used for uploading video on streaming website.

3GP is a multimedia container format developed by 3GPP for 3G UMTS multimedia services. .3gp file format is used on 3G mobile phones. 3GP video files stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, etc.

1. MP4 uses AAC for audio while 3GPP uses AMR (adaptive multi rate).
2. 3GP is dedicated for GSM-based phones, while MP4 are used for general use.
3. 3GP uses 3GP Timed Text for subtitles, while MP4 uses ttxt, VobSubs and BIFS for subtitles.
4. 3GP do not support menu support (like in a DVD), while MP4 has this useful capability.
