CAF Music format

CAF (Core Audio Format) is a container audio format developed by Apple Inc. for storing audio data as well as text annotations, markers, channel layouts, and other information. Like other container format, .caf file can contain many different audio formats. Compare with AIFF or WAVE, CAF file does not have limited to a 4GB file size, so a single .caf file can theoretically save hundreds of years of recorded audio due to its use of 64-bit file offsets.

We can get .caf file format when using Soundtrack Pro and Logic Studio for their loop and sound effects library for surround-sound audio compressed with the Apple Lossless codec. The CAF file extension is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 and higher; Mac OS X 10.3 needs QuickTime 7 to be installed.

CAF file extension is not compatible with most of media players software for popular portable devices like Windows Media Player, iTunes, iMovie, iPad, iPod or android phones, PSP, Sony walkman, etc. So users often need to convert CAF to MP3 for playing.
