3GP vs FLV

3GP is a multimedia container format developed by 3GPP for 3G UMTS multimedia services. .3gp file format is used on 3G mobile phones. 3GP video files stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, etc.

FLV is a container format developed by Adobe systems which used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player versions 6–11. Flash Video content may also be embedded within SWF files. Flash Video is currently the defacto standard for online video.

1. 3GP is developed by 3GPP and FLV is created by Adobe Systems.
2. FLV is more popular in video streaming like YouTube, Hulu, Metacafe, etc than 3GP.
3. 3GP is dedicated for GSM-based phones.
4. 3GP supports variable bit rate audio, but FLV does not have this capability.
5. 3GP uses 3GP Timed Text for subtitles, but FLV does not support subtitles.
